I Look Like That One Guy

During my teen years, people would occasionally tell me that I looked like actor Matthew Broderick. I didn’t see it, especially, but enough people said it that I eventually decided, okay, I look a little like actor Matthew Broderick.

As soon as high school was over, I grew a goatee. Or it might have technically been an Imperial… I was never really sure. But one thing I am sure of is that actor Matthew Broderick does not have a goatee, so I wasn’t surprised when people stopped telling me I resembled him.

I shaved off my little chin toupee during Spring Break of 2002, if I have my dates right. By that time I had gained some weight, or changed in some other, indefinable way, so that people never started making the Broderick comparison again. In fact, for a couple of years, nobody ever told me I looked like anybody.

Until now. Within the last month, about six people have told me I look like “that one guy from American Pie.” I’ve seen American Pie once on basic cable, and didn’t really like it that much, so I wasn’t sure who they were talking about. I thought maybe it was Thomas Ian Nicholas, who had also starred in A Kid in King Arthur’s Court and that classic Rookie of the Year (which, by the way, contains one of Daniel Stern’s most underrated performances).

These people did tell me that the guy I looked like was the character in the movie who was, um, seduced by Jennifer Coolidge’s character, although they didn’t phrase it that way. I turned to the almost always useful IMDb to see if I could figure out which actor it was, and it turned out to be Eddie Kaye Thomas.

Thomas, who played the character Finch in the movie, hasn’t had any other big, noteworthy roles. I guess he does some independent stuff. But a female-type person has assured me that he’s cute, so I guess it’s not a bad thing to look like him. I might be less enthused if I was being compared to Pie actor Eugene Levy.

Anyway, there’s a pretty good-quality picture of the guy right here. And of course, I’m the one in the middle in this much-distributed-by-me picture. What do you think? Do I look like him?

And now to use Muujware’s nifty journal comment system. What about you folks out there in World Wide Web Land? Do people tell you that you look like anybody? Who? Are you happy or dismayed about it? Comment away.

And if you know someone who looks like Jennifer Coolidge, let me know.

Kyla and I said that Finch reminded us of you (mostly in general appearance and mannerisms) way back when we first saw American Pie.

I had been told in high school that I look something like Peter Billingsley from A Christmas Story. I never saw the resemblance, but I heard it from more than one person. In college, I was generally compared to John Belushi.

I can see the Finch resemblance. And at least he was one of the cooler characters (to me anyway)--smarter and more mature than the other male bozos in Pie.

I've really only seen the first of the 'Pie' movies, and I only watched it once so I don't really remember the guy and/or his performance at all. Based on them there pictures, I don't see it. At all.

Matt (http://www.muujware.com/matthew/) used to tell me sometimes that I reminded him of a cross between David Letterman and Conan O'Brien. I don't know if there's any truth to that or not...

You do look moderately like this Eddie Kaye Thomas joker.

Who, by the way, also starred in Off Centre on the WB, one of the crappiest sitcoms I've ever seen.

Yeah, I said "no other big, noteworthy roles," but I didn't think about maybe Off Centre being noteworthy for its sheer awfulness.

Monty: A cross between David Letterman and Conan O'Brien? Why, you must be the funniest man in late night!

Michael: Peter Billingsley, that's funny. But I'm not sure whether or not you should be flattered by the Belushi thing.

Way back like 8 or 9 years ago, Britta and I were driving near the Getty Street campus (now Flores Elementary) and saw a young and impressionable Ryan Roe walking down the street with his family. "Hey, that guy looks exactly like John Bell!" said Britta.
Now, if you had the good fortune to know John Bell, you know there was no resemblance between the two whatsoever.
Eddie Kaye Thomas, however, I can totally see.

Oh yeah, John Bell. I never knew the guy, but in the first couple of weeks that I was a member of the Uvalde High School band, a bunch of people told me I looked like him. I think Alejandro even called me John once.

Maybe someday I'll meet this so-called "John Bell", and we can do the mirror routine from the Marx Brothers' Duck Soup.

Someone once told me that I looked the the girl from Center Stage. When I asked her which one, all she could tell me was "the anorexic one." It was quite sweet!

You and Eugene Levy do sort of resemble each other....

The only one I've gotten recently is the one girl who said I look like "the guy from A Beautiful Mind." She didn't know his name, though, so I never figured out if it was Russell Crowe or one of the more minor characters like Paul Bettany, Adam Goldberg, Josh Lucas, or Anthony Rapp.

I mean, I know I have the rugged good looks, raw sex appeal, and leading-man charisma of Russell Crowe, but it's possible she was talking about someone else. Can anyone offer some insight?

Ryan, you don't look anything like that guy--you're much better looking! People keep telling me that I look like my older sister--she's the good-looking one in the family, so that's a compliment.

Well, Jason, based on that one picture of you that I saw from Ryan's journal about that comic con, I'd say you look not unlike Paul Bettany.

Looking like Paul Bettany would not be a bad thing, I reckon. Jason, you should ask out the next girl you see who looks like Jennifer Connelly.

Here's a new one. Today at work a lady asked me, "Has anyone ever told you you favor the Osmonds?"

I said, "The Osmonds? Um... no. All of them?"

"The older ones."

I said, "I've never heard that before, but I guess as long as I don't look like Marie..."

She said, "No, like the older boys. They had really good teeth. Clean-cut, all-American boys. Ask your parents."

I don't need to ask my parents to know who the Osmonds are. But that's funny. The Osmonds.
