Smell the Sweet Aroma of Oscar

It’s so nice of the Academy to hold the Oscars on my birthday this year, isn’t it? That would be this coming Sunday, February 27. If I’m not too busy eating cake, I’ll be watching the ceremony.

They’re making some changes this year… All the actor and actress nominees will be lined up onstage when the category is announced, instead of sitting in the audience. I think as long as they have them all up there together, they should have a rock-paper-scissors tournament. Wouldn’t it be fun to see Don Cheadle rock Jamie Foxx’s scissors, only to lose the acting award to him? And imagine the tough guy lines Clint Eastwood could use to intimidate Leonardo DiCaprio as they throw down some rochambeau.

So anyway, here are my predictions:

Actor: Jamie Foxx. You’d have to be blind not to see that he’s going to win it. Ha. Ha.

Supporting Actor: Morgan Freeman

Worst Picture with a Guy from That 70s Show: The Butterfly Effect

Actress: Hilary Swank

Supporting Actress: Natalie Portman. Maybe she’s not the front-runner, but she’s the one I’d vote for. And she got a Golden Globe. And if she ever wants to call me, that’d be fine.

Best Picture with a Guy from That 70s Show: In Good Company

Animated Feature: The Incredibles. If this doesn’t win, I’m moving to Canada.

Art Direction: Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events

Cinematography: The Aviator

Funniest Tom Hanks Voice: The Ladykillers. I would have said The Polar Express or The Terminal, but those aren’t so much funny ha-ha.

Costume: The Aviator

Documentary Feature: The Story of the Weeping Camel. Although I’d vote for Super Size Me, possibly because it’s the only one I’ve seen.

Documentary Short: Autism is a Word

Best Eddie Deezen: The Polar Express. By far.

Editing: Collateral. The only one of the nominees that I walked away from saying, “Hey, that had some good editing.”

Foreign Film: The Sea Inside is the only one I’ve heard of. I guess Hero, this year’s obligatory foreign sleeper hit, isn’t eligible.

Grossest Scene, Like, Ever, Involving an Eyeball, but it Was Kind of Funny: Kill Bill Vol. 2

Makeup: Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. It was amazing! They made Jim Carrey’s face look so funny!

Score: Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, Finding Neverland. You know, it’s impressive that she has the time to do this, what with starring on Malcolm in the Middle… What’s that? Jan? Oh, that’s very different. Nevermind.

Song: “Believe”

Largest Hand: Hellboy. Although The Rock could win in an upset.

Animated Short: Ryan. Because that’s my name!!!

Short: Everything in this Country Must

Sound Editing: The Incredibles

Sound Mixing: Spider-Man 2

Blindest Swordsman: The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi

Visual Effects: Spider-Man 2 will win. But I’d vote for I, Robot.

Adapted Screenplay: Sideways

Most Surprising Nudity: (tie) Sideways and Open Water, though they were so very different.

Original Screenplay: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It’s definitely the most original.

Director: Martin Scorsese, The Aviator. Come on, it was so well-made. And if he doesn’t win, he might start growing out his fingernails and saving his urine.

Picture: Million Dollar Baby. That’s right, I’m sayin’ the best picture won’t also win Best Director. Now watch it happen. If I were in the Academy, I’d vote for Sideways.

Check back later to see how I do. I’m looking forward to this year’s show, especially the montage of “Movies This Year That Jude Law Was Not In,” which will be very short.

I'm not sure who'll get the most applause in the death montage this year. Maybe Brando. What do you guys think?

Some more ideas for speeding up the show:

* Split Screen--different parts of the award ceremony could be happening simultaneously. For those who do not care about best makeup, they could pay attention to the other half of the screen. Stereo/surround sound would be a must.

* Delay the television cast by 30 minutes and play the video back at a slightly faster rate. Perhaps speed up slow sections like Benny Hill. That would be hilarious.

For me, Eddie Deezen will always be Sphincter from "A Polish Vampire in Burbank."

Matt, your split screen idea is great. Some people have suggested not broadcasting the technical awards, but I like your way better... The sound effects guy's mom still gets to see him on TV, but the show goes by twice as fast.

Scratch the stereo/surround sound idea...The Second Audio Program could be used to carry the second audio channel. I doubt that the awards are translated to any other languages live, so the SAP would be going to waste anyway.

Personally, I'm disappointed that more stations don't use the SAP. When I was living in Houston, you could watch the Simpsons in Spanish on SAP, and at least one show on the Spanish stations had an English translation on SAP.

I just wonder if they'll include Hunter S. Thompson in the death montage, even though he wasn't really involved in movies--he just had a great one made about him. The montages are the only reason I ever watch the Oscars.

You forgot who's going to win the Thalberg award!

Scorsese can't win. The Aviator is already his highest-grossing movie of all time, finally beating Cape Fear's not-so-impressive $79 Million.

Things are going too well for him. If he also wins an Oscar, he wouldn't be Martin Scorsese anymore.

Sara: I know you like montages... But I still say they're boring when they show clips of movies I've never heard of, and frustrating when they show clips of movies I want to see but haven't, and it makes me realize I'll never get to see them all..

Anthony: So you're thinking Eastwood then?

I haven't seen any of the nominated movies. Not one. I'd like to say it was out of protest but in reality I just have poor taste.

I hope that The Incredibles wins for best animation so you don't have to move to Canada. Although we would come visit you, occasionally. In the summer.

Hey, I'm changing my prediction for Supporting Actor. At first I said Clive Owen, but now I'm saying Morgan Freeman. I just have a hunch. Sometimes a hunch pays off, sometimes it doesn't. What I'm trying to say is, I have a hunch. Easy Reader shall be victorious.

Yeah, I'm thinking Eastwood.

I mean, I *hope* Scorsese wins, but I'm certainly not going to get my hopes up.
