If you know me—and most of you do, unless you stumbled upon my journal while searching for “naked cuckoo bird” or “Winston Churchill calamari”—then you’re probably aware that I am a fan of comic books. I’ve even written about my comics geekhood here, after I attended my first convention.
To make a longbox story short (heh), I’ve loved comics ever since I received Fantastic Four #331 way back in 1989. I think it was my Uncle John who bought it for me, thus introducing me to a world of great imagination, archetypes and metaphors, and goofy-looking costumes. Since then, I’ve tended to stick mostly to the superhero* comics of publishers Marvel and DC. Although I’ve enjoyed and appreciated a number of comics about talking ducks, samurais, and really, really depressed people, it’s the superheroes I’m consistently drawn to. Lately I’ve been eagerly following DC’s Infinite Crisis, which finds Earth-2’s Superman getting really ticked off at Earth-1’s Superman. It’s Superman vs. Superman! How cool is that? Man, I dig comics. I could read comics all day.
Or could I? Well, I’ve decided to give it a try. On a day in the very near future, when I don’t have much else to do, I will endeavor to spend an entire day reading comic books. I’m going to initially define “all day” as eight hours, not counting a lunch break, like a normal workday. If it goes well, though, I’m open to expanding it to ten, twelve hours, maybe even more if I can tap into the speed force and slow down the relative passage of time. I have the entire twenty-part “Reign of the Supermen” storyline standing by.
I already have several comics from my collection in mind. Hopefully, the array of issues I read will be representative of my eclectic tastes, although a large percentage of the stories will feature guys punching each other. I also want to read a couple of comics I’ve never read before and know nothing about. To that end, I recently purchased one issue each of The Iron Ghost and Ferro City, both of which are completely unknown to me.
I have some Berries & Cream Dr Pepper to help me see this thing through, and I believe I am mentally prepared to spend an entire day reading comics. I bet the media will compare me to David Blaine, who is currently spending an entire week underwater, but he’s doing his stunt without any issues of Martian Manhunter. Stay tuned for the follow-up post, to see how my day full o’ comics turns out.
In the meantime, here’s the list of titles I plan to choose from during my marathon of sequential art consumption. I know many of you don’t know anything about these, and that’s cool. But either way, here they are:
The Adventures of Jell-O Man and Wobbly 1 All-Star Squadron 51 Amazing Spider-Man 50 Amelia Rules! 10 Archie Meets the Punisher Astonishing X-Men 5 Captain America 177 Batman 613 Birds of Prey 86 DC Comics Presents Justice League of America Dream Police Fantastic Four 331 Fantastic Four 352 Ferro City 3 The Flash 155 The Flash 156 The Fly 4 Green Lantern 72 Green Lantern 80-Page Giant 1 Hellboy: The Corpse Herobear and the Kid 3 Herobear and the Kid 4 Incredible Hulk 348 Incredible Hulk 428 The Iron Ghost 6 Justice League Europe 1 The Justice Society Returns! 1: All-American Comics Martian Manhunter 23 Marvel Selects 6 Nightwing 67 The Ren & Stimpy Show 6 Saga of the Swamp Thing 30 Savage Dragon 2 Savage Dragon/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 Sensational She-Hulk 50 Sock Monkey (Vol. 2) 2 Spider-Man, Storm and Power Man Spider-Man 15 Spider-Man 21 Stray Bullets 22 Stray Bullets 25 Superman: Superman-Red and Superman-Blue Superman: The Mysterious Mr. Mxyztplk Superman 221 Teen Titans 32 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures 6 The Tick 3 1963: The Tomorrow Syndicate Transformers 67 Uncle Scrooge: The Second-Richest Duck Usagi Yojimbo 62 Watchmen 4 What The--?! 8 World’s Best Comics Sampler
*Did you know Marvel and DC co-own a trademark on the word “superhero?” This Wikipedia article has more information. Comments on this post are closed. |

"Tap into the speed force and slow down the relative passage of time." That's the kind of Mark Waid-y talk I like to hear. I can only wish you the best of luck and tell you that I dig many of your choices.
What's DC Comics Presents Justice League of America? |
|
| What I want to know is--how is that Berries & Cream Dr. Pepper? Is it really good? And does it come in a diet version? Oh, and yeah, good luck with the comics thing. I think you can do it, especially if the Dr. Pepper is really good. |

that sounds like the best idea. ever.
i have the whole martian manhunter series and i think it's brilliant. which issue is #23 (just out of blatant curiousity)? |
|
Tricia/Mom: Dr Pepper Berries & Cream (which is technically its name; I had the cart before the horse in the article) is pretty good. It does not taste like a horse.
Joe: I should collect the rest of Martian Manhunter. #23 is one of the "Revelations" stories, about J'onn J'onnz's early encounters with various heroes. It's the one with the Spectre. |

| That Madeline Kahn/Grover bit makes me happy every time I hear it. |
|
| Even more amazingly, I had your birthday gift delivered to a comic book store near you. It's under the name "F. Ree Komick." |
