Remember this story, which I posted devoid of an ending? I invited you, the readers of this journal, to tell me whether you thought Melinda should be awarded 97 points for playing the brand new word "QLERFER" in her Scrabble game with Doug.

The results are in. Of the six people who commented on that journal, all six said Melinda should get the points. I did receive one dissenting vote by e-mail from a reader of this journal who made a very reasonable and logical case against Melinda. But this is a democracy, not a reason-and-logicocracy. Here, then, is the end of the story.

. . . . .

Doug frowned. "I challenge."

"Oh, come on," sighed Melinda.

"You come on. I challenge you and your QLERFER." Doug knew the word would not appear in any dictionary they checked.

"I bet you're thinking you can challenge me and you'll win because the word's not in any dictionaries," Melinda said. "Well, of course it's not. No word is in the dictionary when it's first invented."

"Um," said Doug.

Melinda glanced at the Scrabble board. "Do you think the word 'crossword' was in the first Webster's dictionary? Of course it wasn't. Somebody had to invent crossword puzzles, and invent the word, and then the word got in the dictionary. But are you going to try to tell me 'crossword' is not a word?"

"I guess not, but--"

"So they just named the bird. That doesn't make the bird's name any less a word. There just hasn't been enough time for the dictionaries to catch up. So I get the points, right? Right."

This actually sounded reasonable, so Doug decided not to turn the challenge into a battle. Melinda got the 97 points, and she went on to win the game by a margin of 64 points, the largest ever in a Doug-Melinda Scrabble match.

However, later that afternoon they played three games of Battleship, and Doug won all three games.

Yes, logicocracy. You can expect me to use that word the next time we play Scrabble.
