When I was a senior in high school, the high school band stopped to eat at a Luby's cafeteria on the way to a contest. As I went through the line, I noticed that the elderly lady serving salads had a nametag reading "ZOLA."
I had never heard of this name before, but it was pretty cool. I pointed it out to my friends Chris and Bonnie Leigh. "Look at her name," I said. "Zola!" She heard me say her name and looked at us. Bonnie Leigh said, "They like your name," and Zola smiled politely.
A few weeks later, I learned that we would be stopping at the same Luby's on the way to a different contest. I still don't know why, but I wrote a song about Zola, to the tune of Lola by Ray Davies and the Kinks. When I passed through the line the next time, I gave it to her, saying it was from "the band."
I didn't expect her to look at it then and there, but she did. She smiled at me, a smile both flattered and bewildered and said, "That's lovely. Thank you."
I moved on to the entree lady, and I've never seen Zola since. Someday I hope to go back to that Luby's and say hello to Zola. Until then, here's the song I wrote, for whatever reason I wrote it.
Zola dedicated by the UHS band to our favorite Luby's employee
I met her in the Luby’s cafeteria line Where they serve everything from chopped steak to Coca-Cola C-O-L-A Cola When she smiled at me it made me feel so fine I looked at her nametag and it told me her name was Zola Z-O-L-A Zola Zo zo zo zo Zola
Well, I’ve been around but I ain’t never seen A cafeteria lady with a hairnet so clean Oh my Zola Zo zo zo zo Zola And she was never mean and she was never rude All she wanted to do was serve me some food Oh my Zola Zo zo zo zo Zola Zo zo zo zo Zola
As she put my fruit salad in a plastic bowl I could that she was stirring something deep in my soul And as I moved along with Jell-O on my tray I knew that I’d coming back someday To see my Zola Zo zo zo zo Zola Zo zo zo zo Zola
Zola Zo zo zo zo Zola Zo zo zo zo Zola (repeat to fade out) Comments on this post are closed. |

Depending on which (mis-)translation you consult, Zola is a creature from the Legend of Zelda series. Sometimes (especially in early games) it is written as Zola, but it appears that Zora is the "correct" name.
Not that I'm saying that the lady in question has anything in common with Zelda's Zola/Zora. Well, maybe she does. You never can be too sure. |

| Do you notice a trend between you and I and the lovely ladies of food preparation services? |
|
| ps.....while reviewing talent shows past at my school I saw a segment of two elderly lunch ladies line dancing. I said to the person watching the tape with me "I bet you one of them is named Patsy?" to which she said "They both are named Patsy." |
|
Justin: All school lunch ladies are named Patsy or Gladys. All Taca Cabana ladies are named Sondra.
Matt: If I ever see Zola again, I'll be sure to ask her if she's a fan of The Legend of Zelda. |

I remember you talking about Zola, but I don't think I ever actually heard (or read) your song. It's too bad I never had the pleasure of meeting her.
Did she really say, "That's lovely"? |

| Ryan, you definately have bigger stones than I do. Your song is both witty and flattering, and I really do like it. But I don't think that I would have had the guts to give it to good ol' Zola. I bow to you... |

| Thanks! Of all the songs I've ever written for cafeteria employees, that one is my favorite. |
