Ryan on TV: Fall 2004 Follow-Up

Here we are almost at the midseason and I'm just now writing a follow-up to my Fall 2004 TV journal.

“What up wit’ dat?” you may ask.

What up is dat I made my predictions for the four shows Most Likely to Get Cancelled, so I’ve kind of been waiting for some of them to get the axe so I can say, “A-ha! I knew it!” However, of the shows I named, two of them-- Listen Up and Center of the Universe-- started late in the season, so it was weeks after my journal before they even aired. And one of the shows I named, Jonny Zero, hasn’t actually premiered yet. It’s set to be a midseason replacement, a fact that I did not realize. Just call me “Jonny Zero Awareness.”

Though I haven’t seen Listen or Life, critics generally don’t like them, so it should be only a matter of time.

Meanwhile, Life as We Know It-- which is sometimes written as life as we know it, because apparently it was created by e.e. cummings, or possibly k.d. lang—is still on. Who’s watching it? I have no idea. If you’re watching it, please comment below and tell me why.

I gave Commando Nanny one of my awards for Worst New Show Title. I should have given it the Most Likely to Get Cancelled nod, though, because it pulled a Grubbs. That’s right… It got cancelled before it even aired. What if it was really a high-quality, smart and funny show? We'd never know! It's a shame to think of what we could be missing out on. Quick! Somebody start an online petition! (Assuming there's not one already.)

Remember how I said Lost sounded like an intriguing show to me, so I expected it to fail because of my Television Curse? Well, it sure fooled me... in a good way. I watched the first episode, liked it a lot, and continued to watch… and lo and behold! It’s one of the big new hits of the season! Wow! And so far it’s lived up to its potential, although what’s up with Kate suddenly having mad skillz for tracking people through the jungle? And what about Hurley’s name not really being Hurley? And stuff like that. I sure hope those writers know what they’re doing.

There was another show that looked intriguing to me at the beginning of the season, but I didn’t want to say anything about it because I was afraid I would jinx it. It would be bad enough for me to jinx Lost and Veronica Mars (which I haven’t even been able to see because I don’t currently get UPN). I didn't want to potentially be responsible for killing another innocent show.

So, without mentioning it in my journal, I watched the first episode. I liked it a lot. I continued to watch. And it’s like the biggest hit ever! The show I refer to is of course Desperate Housewives. Not only does this show skillfully switch tones from scene to scene and handle multiple continuing storylines, it has also led to important, in-depth discussions among viewers, on such topics as, “Who’s hotter, Susan or Gabrielle?” (Answer: Gabrielle is hotter, but Susan is the one you’d want as your girlfriend.)

I now laugh in the face of my Television Curse! Although I’m not sure if I could find a curse’s face. I might end up laughing in its kneecaps. But I think my curse is officially over. You might say it’s gone the way of the dodo… or the way of Andy Richter Controls the Universe.

It's starting to worry me, though... I watch and enjoy these new shows, and the rest of American watches and enjoys them too. Am I losing my edge? Am I becoming a conformist? Or is everyone else finally starting to watch TV that doesn't suck? Either way, I'm going to keep watching.

That’s about all I got for now, except to say that I’m very psyched for the return of Alias in January. It’s starting at the midseason, so they can show new episodes for twenty weeks straight. That’s awesome! If you’ve never seen the show, which stars Jennifer Garner as Sydney Bristow. But let me just tell you, if you liked Garner in 13 Going on 30… well, you might not necessarily like Alias because her character is really nothing like the one from that movie.

In closing, let me just say to Life as We Know It and Center of the Universe… You’re goin’ down.

Reading your journal makes me want to watch TV.

That's a compliment.

I hope you get the chance to see Veronica Mars eventually, because I'm nearly certain you'll love it. I've become addicted to it, and was going to bring it up the next time I talked to you.

It's a good one, anyway.

Amy: You should watch TV. TV is good. I can't imagine what I would do without it. I mean, I'd read more. But how much reading does a fella really need, anyway?

Anthony: I don't know why Dish Network here doesn't carry Austin's UPN affiliate. I've been meaning to write or call them about it forever or so. Ooh, maybe I should start another online petition. Has Veronica Mars "found an audience" yet, as they say?

Does anything on UPN really find an audience? Anyway, as far as I know, the ratings have been slowing creeping up, so that's good.

Guess what? I did some research, and Austin doesn't have a UPN affiliate! Can you imagine that? It's nuts! I did find an Austin Chronicle column online that indicated there used to be a UPN, but I'm not sure what happened to it. Maybe it got sick of all the traffic on I-35.

Oh well, in this day age everything comes out on DVD eventually. If Tru Calling can make it onto DVD, surely Veronica Mars will.

You know, now that you mention it, I'm pretty sure the UPN channel we get is San Antonio. Then again, I don't watch much other than Cartoon Network, Comedy Central, and Sci-Fi, so I'm not a good source of TV information.

If I remember right, there did used to be an Austin UPN affiliate (Channel 13 or 14 I think), but it was very weak. You had to basically be downtown to pick up the signal. I'm not even sure Time Warner ever carried it.

Hey, guess what! I finally read your new journal. It makes me wish I watched TV, but not really all that much.

I hope you like backhanded compliments.

I don't like backhanded compliments, but I'd accept a left-handed compliment.

Oh, and you should watch TV.

TV is for people with television sets.

Would you accept a compliment from my right foot?
