Empty Emotionlessness of the Sith

As I write this, less than a week remains until the opening of Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith. And yet, I’m just not that excited.

Traditionally I’ve been bubbly with the carbon dioxide of anticipation at the prospect of a new Star Wars movie. When The Phantom Menace was released, I got an advance ticket, bought a toy lightsaber, and made sure to see the first showing on opening night.

In 2002, Attack of the Clones came out, and you may remember this excited post I made, entitled “Hype of the Clones.” In that post, I talk about rewatching The Phantom Menace and coming away with a new appreciation of how good it was, and waiting with bated, um, Wookiee breath for the new film.

It’s now three years later and I’m a bit less generous in my praise of Menace. Attack of the Clones had cooler action sequences, but it’s still not what I would call a Great Film.

I hear people talking about the new movie. I’ve read a million articles about all the great merchandise. Last week, coworker Stevenn was going on and on about General Grievous and have you seen all those lightsabers he has? Yeah, the Sith droid looks frigging awesome… but somehow even that doesn’t ramp up my excitement much.

What’s up with me? Am I just trying not to get my expectations too high? Perhaps my apathy is a result of my ticked-off-edness at George Lucas for his refusal to release the classic, unaltered versions of the original trilogy on DVD. Or maybe my excitement for the upcoming release of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants casts a huge shadow that Star Wars just can’t trump. (Ooh… mixed metaphor.)

I should note that the tie-in commercials have been great. Chewbacca recording cell phone ring tones, an M&M confronting Darth Vader, Yoda trying to steal a Pepsi… this is funny stuff. But rather than piquing my interest in the movie, it just makes me wonder whether the film itself will be as entertaining as the ads.

I'll be delighted if the movie blows me away, forcing me to come back here and reverse my position (though I'm not sure I could reach the keyboard). I'll find out soon enough. But until then... eh.

I can’t be the only one who feels this way. Leave your comments below, in English or Gungan.

I plan on posting something about my thoughts this weekend, so I'll be brief here.

Suffice it to say, for now, I'm currently listening to the Revenge of the Sith soundtrack. In fact, this is probably the n-th time I've listened to "Battle of the Heroes," where, as Lore put it, "n is stupid."

***Contains spoilers on par with "Obi-Wan dies" ***

Us much as I'd like Jar-Jar to get a vibroblade in the forehead, I think Padmé dying (I only assume this happens) will better serve the series. I think the first two were lacking in the evil department. The bad guys didn't come off as mean enough to me. I think RotS will be much more dramatic and with that, more entertaining.

What I want to know is: If the Vibroblades in "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" were able to block light sabers, then why is it not until the Clone Wars that this sort of defense resurfaces in the form of the staves that General Grievous's droids use?

Then again, in SW: KOTOR, Kashyyyk (bless you) looks very little like in the movie, so I guess the whole "Expanded Universe" vs Canon comes to life once again. Perhaps some lumber corporation came and deforested the Wookie planet and rid it of it's many-kilometer-high trees.

Yeah, I have not been chomping at the bit to see this movie either. I have toyed with just not seeing it att all. Matthew has threatened to revoke my Muujware membership if I don't. It is not that I think that the movie will be bad, but to end almost three decades of Star Wars on such a heartbreaking note is just hard for me. The turn to the dark side is never pretty. And have you noticed that bad teeth is evidentally part of becoming a Sith?

I feel pretty much the same way.

Although I'm not really that excited about Alexis Bledel's movie either, so I probably have a different problem entirely.
